Grand Theft Auto V is home to a wide variety of notorious mods that suit the parodical humor found in the game series. However, one recent mod has apparently irked Samsung, who has now decided to call for the removal of a YouTube video featuring the mod. The mod in question is the model swap that changes sticky bombs into a Samsung Galaxy Note 7. While the mod is just a bit of harmless fun that fits in pretty well with the sardonic humor of the Grand Theft Auto series, apparently Samsung isn't laughing. The original video highlighting the mod has now been taken down via a DMCA complaint issued by Samsung itself. However, if Samsung intends to completely remove evidence of the mod's existence from YouTube, its work is far from done, as many other videos have since popped up with gameplay featuring the mod. The mod, of course, stems from the recent controversy surrounding Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 phone. The phone was recalled and has now been completely discontinued due to the explosive nature of the phone's battery. Following the phone's recall, the Oculus pulled support for the Galaxy Note 7. While some people have been hurt by these phones catching fire, the GTA modder clearly took some creative inspiration by it, turning it into a quick sticky bomb mod for the game. It remains to be seen if the creator of the video will try to fight against the DMCA claim. Since they didn't lift the model from any official Samsung property, the video should be allowed to be on YouTube. However, DMCA claims are notoriously difficult to fight against, and the creator may simply decide it's not worth their time. In any case, Samsung's DMCA claim may mean that it will make an effort to take down the mod itself, so gamers who are interested in trying it out should consider downloading it soon. Samsung is struggling with plunging shares and serious harm to its reputation among consumers, but it doesn't seem like taking down a simple YouTube video making fun of the problem is the way to correct it. Anyone who has seen the news, boarded a plane, or has paid attention to social media at all surely knows about the phone's explosive nature, so a joke video created to showcase a mod doesn't seem to add a whole lot to the controversy. Among gamers - particularly Grand Theft Auto fans - this knee-jerk reaction from Samsung could actually potentially harm its reputation further. Galaxy Note 7 ze względu na problemy z baterią nie cieszy się zbyt dobrą opinią wśród internautów. Do phabletu przylgnęła już łatka wybuchającego telefonu, a producentowi trudno będzie to zmienić. Gracze stworzyli modyfikację do GTA V, której można było się spodziewać. Podmienia ona dostępne w grze samoprzylepne bomby na Galaxy Note 7. Autor moda - HitmanNiko - opublikował nawet materiał wideo, w którym zaprezentował efekt swoich prac. Trzeba przyznać, że rzucanie phabletem Samsunga w przechodniów i przejeżdżające samochody, które następnie wylatują w powietrze, wygląda dość zabawnie. More specifically, a video of a mod in Grand Theft Auto V that allows players to use the Note 7 as a weaponized explosive (opens in new tab).Created by a game tinkerer under the name HitmanNiko, the mod re-skins the sticky bomb weapon to look like a Note 7, exaggerating the phone's affinity for ignition to outrageous effect in a manner fitting of ... well, Grand Theft to note is that, as it currently stands, the takedown doesn't exactly have merit. YouTube's copyright violation tools are designed to shut down videos that explicit copy protected material - songs, film clips, TV episodes and the like. Fan-made recreations of consumer products may not cut it if the video's owner files a counter-claim to get it back online, meaning that the takedown may only buy Samsung a week or so of reduced ridicule, at all said, it is possible that the takedown was a result of automated processes designed to flag questionable content on YouTube, though that seems unlikely as this is currently an isolated do we mean by 'isolated'? Well, hunting down all instances of the mod on YouTube will be quite a feat, since the original video is far, far from the only one showcasing a virtual exploding Note that bring a Note 7 on a plane could result in fines and/or criminal prosecution in the US, and that Samsung seemingly has no idea what went wrong, we'd say the company has bigger issues surrounding the real-life exploding phone than this unofficial one made by a GTA contacted Samsung to learn more about the nature of the takedown and its grounds for claiming copyright. Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Choć to kawał dobrego sprzętu, to afera z wybuchającymi smartfonami odbiła się takim echem, że smartfon ten zajął w świadomości internautów niechlubne miejsce, tuż obok Windows Visty, Map Apple czy Yahoo. W efekcie jeden z modderów pokusił się o dokonanie przeróbki GTA V, w której zamiast przyczepianego ładunku wybuchowego, występuje Note 7. Trudno nazwać ten zabieg niewypałem. Klip zaczyna się od wizyty w sklepie z bronią, gdzie można nabyć wszelkiego rodzaju artykuły masowego rażenia. Wśród innych rzeczy, po które zwykle nie wychodzimy do warzywniaka, za przezroczystą gablotą znajduje się Galaxy Note 7 (swoją drogą wygląda on chyba bardziej jak Note 5). Po dokonaniu zakupu, modder pokazuje, jak przy pomocy wybuchającego smartfona wywołać zamieszki w spokojnej dotąd dzielnicy miasta (co zresztą jest typowe dla serii GTA). Oczywiście w realu, o ile dochodziło do uszkodzenia mienia, nikt nie doświadczył poważnych obrażeń ciała (przynajmniej nic mi o takim przypadku nie wiadomo). Oprócz tego, sporo przypadków pożarów, rzekomo spowodowanych przez Samsungi, to historyjki nieprawdziwe lub naciągane. Wadliwe akumulatory SDI są sukcesywnie wymieniane, a marka podchodzi do sprawy poważnie. Firma nie miała wyboru i zamiast skupić się na kampanii reklamowej flagowca, musiała przekierować środki na działania, których można było uniknąć. Samsung is not happy about a Grand Theft Auto V mod that turns the literally explosive Galaxy Note 7 into an in-game bomb. The company is trying to erase videos of the mod from YouTube, abusing the DMCA in the process. The DMCA, or Digital Millennium Copyright Act, is a law that specifically relates to digital copyright infringement. Companies use the DMCA to issue takedown notices to websites like YouTube when a user has uploaded copyrighted content like films or music, however the Galaxy Note 7 mod for GTA V doesn't really infringe on the DMCA. The mod videos are also quite clearly a satirical parody of the whole exploding Galaxy Note 7 saga, which is generally protected under various laws. Samsung has only taken down a small selection of GTA V mod videos at this stage, so it's not clear if someone at Samsung has manually requested takedowns for some videos, or whether the process was automatic. In any case, it's still easy to find videos demonstrating the mod's functionality through a simple search. The GTA V mod featuring the Galaxy Note 7 is surprisingly simple: it replaces the sticky bomb with a 3D model of the Note 7, so in game characters react to the Note 7 in the same way as they would for a regular bomb. Samsung has been embroiled in its scandal of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones blowing up, and now the story gets worse with the South Korean giant getting pissed after someone used a Note 7 in a mod for Grand Theft Auto V, which doubled Samsung's troubled smartphone as a bomb. The video has been taken down from YouTube, with Samsung Electronics America, Inc. slapping it with a copyright claim - with Kotaku adding in the perfect comment: "Perhaps Samsung was trying to file more claims, but the device they were using exploded before they could complete the process"... oh channel Modded Games is behind the video, with user 'sdaddy345' saying: "Pretty bummed out that Samsung copyright take downed a video that I made 100%... No logo, image or even the word 'Samsung' was uttered/shown in the video. It was pretty much the same thing as this video, which is just a gta 5 player throwing the phone at cars and blowing them up".Well, sorry sdaddy345 - but even the screenshot from the video shows that the phone being used as a bomb says "Samsung" at the top of it.

We’ve embedded one such example below, but fair warning, it might not last long: Samsung is reportedly using DMCA takedown claims to force YouTube to remove these videos, claiming copyright the Verge points out, this claim doesn’t exactly tick the boxes of a traditional DMCA takedown claim (the site calls it a “ridiculous overreach,” if we’re not mincing words), as it should fall under the fair use umbrella of parody. Indeed, at the time of this writing, the video that Techdirt originally claimed had been removed was still a live link, which could mean the video publisher successfully appealed the DMCA claim. It’s just one more in a long line of PR fails Samsung has faced this past month, from injuring children to forcing the evacuation of an airplane to attempting to stop a victim from going to the press to refusing to pay for damages caused by the devices. Apparently, Samsung doesn't think it's very funny, though -- the company appears to have filed a totally bogus copyright infringement claim on the YouTube video showing this you try to watch the video now, you'll see that Samsung has blocked it by using YouTube's tools for reporting infringing material. Of course, this isn't how those tools were meant to be used -- they're for reporting instances in which video or audio is posted in violation of copyright. Using the Note 7's likeness in a video made from a video game mod doesn't really seem like what YouTube's tools are meant to be used for. Fortunately, that was far from the only YouTube video that shows off the Galaxy Note 7 being used as an incendiary device. Now that the cat's out of the bag, it's probably not worth the effort for Samsung to chase down these videos -- the company has a lot more serious things to be worrying about right now. Update 10/23: The creator of the video successfully won a challenge against Samsung's claim, which lacked "one or more legally-required elements." You can watch as much as you like, at least for now. Not that a takedown would have helped Samsung much as it is.
